GAS GIANT Santos has cleared the final hurdle in its bid to commission the Barossa project, piping gas to the Darwin LNG facility.
On 22 April, the project was given the go-ahead by Australia’s offshore energy regulator, NOPSEMA.
It has been a long and expensive project for Santos which fought down a bid from the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) launched in 2023 on Indigenous cultural grounds.
The project involves drilling six sub-sea wells approximately 285 kilometres offshore north-northwest of Darwin to produce gas and condensate production, processed at a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facility.
Four of the wells have already been drilled and a fifth is on hold for completion at a later date.
The condensate will be taken by tankers and the natural gas via an export pipeline (GEP) to the Darwin LNG facility.
Following start-up and ramp-up to full production, steady state production is planned to commence in Q3 2025 and will be continuous for approximately 25 years.
Most of the work on the project has already been completed including the main pipeline and Darwin pipeline duplication.
Floating production storage and offloading vessel is nearing completion.
