A REACH stacker caught fire at NSW Ports’ Enfield Intermodal Terminal on Wednesday morning.
Residents in suburbs surrounding Enfield reported they heard – and felt – what sounded like an explosion at round 0400 on 19 April.
A reach stacker moving containers at the intermodal terminal had set fire – the sound reported by locals was the tyres on the vehicle “exploding” due to the heat.
Fire and Rescue NSW told DCN the reach stacker was being driven when the fire started. The vehicle then came to a stop and the driver got out before the blaze intensified.
The fire was extinguished within an hour. Fire and Rescue NSW said its attendants at the scene were conscious of the fire’s potential to spread to adjoining containers.
A spokesperson for NSW Ports said NSW Ports was informed of the incident just after 0400 on Wednesday.
“NSW Ports has since been informed there was a malfunction with the stacker, which caused the vehicle to catch alight,” the spokesperson said.
“Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance responded to the incident.
“The driver of the vehicle was conveyed to hospital for assessment.
“Inquiries into the cause of the incident are ongoing.”
