MAERSK has taken delivery of its first containership that can run on green methanol.
HMD Hull #4168 was built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. in South Korea.
In a social media post, Maersk said the delivery of the vessel is a significant step towards becoming carbon-neutral.
“It marks the beginning of a new era in shipping, where we together can minimise greenhouse gas emissions and create a greener future,” the company said.
The vessel is to embark on a voyage to Copenhagen, where it is due to arrive in September.
With a recent order for six methanol-powered containerships, Maersk now has 25 such ships on order.
The company ordered its first methanol-enabled container vessel following its commitment to only ordering newbuilds that could run on green fuels.
