DREWRY’s composite World Container Index decreased by 3% this week to US$6430 per 40-foot container.
The figure represents a 32% drop since the same week last year and the 24th consecutive weekly decrease.
Drewry said its latest composite index of US$6430 per 40-foot container is now 38% below the peak of US$10,377 reached in September last year, however it remains 78% higher than the five-year average of US$3613 per 40-foot container.
The average composite index for the year-to-date is US$8113 per 40-foot container, which is US$4500 higher than the five-year average of US$3613.
Drewry’s latest assessment indicates freight rates from Shanghai to Genoa dropped US$962 to US$8779 per FEU, which is a 10% decrease.
Spot rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles fell US$151 to US$6834 per 40-foot container, a 2% decrease.
Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam decreased by 1%, or US$106 to US$8833 per 40-foot container.
Rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai, Rotterdam to Shanghai, Shanghai to New York, New York to Rotterdam and vice versa hovered around the previous week’s level.
Drewry said it expects the index to decrease in the next few weeks.
