QUEENSLAND Magnesia is to become the first company in Oceania to reduce its carbon footprint in transportation through Maersk’s ECO Delivery product.
Based near Rockhampton, QMAG is a manufacturer and supplier of magnesia products. It owns one of the world’s largest deposits of cryptocrystalline magnesite.
The partnership will see Maersk provide QMAG with certified carbon neutral shipping based on what it says is “sustainable” biofuel.
Peter Lowe and Christoph Beyer, QMAG’s joint managing directors, said the decision supports the company’s goal to improve its environmental footprint.
“Our purpose at QMAG is to create solutions to make a sustainable difference, so the decision to choose Maersk ECO Delivery for our sea freight was a natural evolution of the steps already taken to secure a more sustainable future,” they said.
Maersk Oceania managing director Henrik Jensen said the partnership would help accelerate decarbonisation of Oceania’s supply chain.
“Partnerships are crucial to secure a sustainable future and no company can do it alone,” he said.
“The co-operation enables Maersk to pool our resources and reduce our respective carbon footprints much more efficiently.”
Maersk said customer demand for its ECO Delivery product has grown by more than 170% year-on-year since its launch in 2019.
The product replaces fossil fuels with green fuels, enabling shipping companies to move closer to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
It delivers direct carbon savings through innovation with customers, technology providers, and certification partners.
