PROTESTERS are planning to block coal shipments at Port of Newcastle this weekend, and port stakeholders have been warned of potential disruptions.

The protest, “The People’s Blockade of the World’s Biggest Coal Port”, will be led by climate activism group Extinction Rebellion.

According to a post on the group’s Facebook page, protesters intend to block the shipping channel between 0900 and 1500 on Sunday 24 April.

It is understood police resources and a special police unit have been committed to the event with a focus on nearby coal service Port Waratah.

“Newcastle Police have informed Port Waratah and other key coal chain stakeholders of a confirmed protest activity on Newcastle Harbour at Horseshoe Beach,” logistics service provider GAC said in a notice.

According to GAC, if an incursion at Port Waratah does occur, it will likely be throughout the heightened period from 0400 Tuesday 19 April until 0700 on Tuesday 26 April.

GAC said the protest may impact shipping movements scheduled during the planned demonstration period.

“In the past, the port has suspended movements during similar incidents in the interests of safety for all involved,” it said.

“Previously, the protest group has engaged in disruptions to coal terminals, rail network, banner drops and infrastructure incursions.”

The group’s Facebook post indicates kayaks, tinnies, rafts and other watercraft will be used to block the channel.

Extinction Rebellion said the demonstration will be driven by a range of environmental concerns, including demands for support for renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and green hydrogen.

The group will also demand federal support to establish and offshore renewable energy zone to create energy and jobs in offshore wind.

Extinction Rebellion’s planned protest is not connected to the demonstrations which disrupted operations at Port Botany last month, which were organised by Blockade Australia.
