NIPPON Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line has welcomed a third vessel into its growing fleet of methanol-fuelled chemical tankers.
Built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, Grouse Sun is equipped with a dual fuel engine designed to operate on heavy fuel oil as well as methanol.
“When navigating using methanol as fuel, the vessel has a new technology that suppresses the production of NOx (nitrogen oxides) by adding water to methanol to lower its temperature during combustion,” NYK said in a statement.
“As a result, the vessel can comply with the IMO’s stringent Tier III NOx emission standard and contribute to environment-friendly transportation without the need for an exhaust gas recirculation system and a selective catalytic reduction device.”
The NOx emission standard falls under the MARPOL Convention, adopted by the International Maritime Organization, and which sets limits on NOx and SOx emissions from vessels.
Under NYK Shipmanagement, Grouse Sun will be engaged in a long-term charter contract with marine transportation company Waterfront Shipping, which operates the world’s largest methanol ocean tanker fleet.
Waterfront Shipping is a subsidiary of Methanex Corporation, the world’s largest producer and supplier of methanol.
