SHIPPING Australia has announced the country’s largest rail freight operator, Aurizon, has joined the association as its newest member.
An ASX-listed company, Aurizon provides rail and road transportation, port services and material handling services for mining, metal, industrial and agricultural customers across several states.
Aurizon operates stevedoring services within six ports, namely Townsville Cairns, Mackay, Gladstone, Port Alma and Newcastle.
It also has export sites in Townsville, Newcastle and the port of Gladstone.
Matthew Gemmell, Aurizon Bulk east commercial manager, said the company is supported by a regional workforce and locally based facilities around Australia, as well as its own fleet and infrastructure.
“Aurizon joined SAL to broaden and deepen our maritime relationships,” Mr Gemmell said.
“We know that relationships are important in the maritime industry, and we look forward to growing our industry networks with the support of SAL.”
Shipping Australia CEO Captain Melwyn Noronha said Shipping Australia is fortunate to have Aurizon a member, and looks forward to working with the company.
“Their input and insight will be invaluable to Shipping Australia in our advocacy of policies that benefit the industry,” Captain Noronha said.
“And, of course, every new company that joins Shipping Australia strengthens the association and a broadly-represented industry can be successful in advocating for policies that benefit all the people of Australia.”
Among the bulk commodities transported by Aurizon are iron ore, cement, bauxite, alumina, base metals, grain, livestock, fertilise and dangerous goods.
Shipping Australia said the company is well-positioned in markets serving the global uptake of electric vehicles, telecommunications and renewable energy infrastructure driving demand for Australian resources such as cobalt, copper and lithium.
“We are also excited to announce that Aurizon has a new Liebherr 550c Mobile Harbour Crane arriving in early 2023 at our facility at the Port of Gladstone which will expand our services to include stevedoring, warehousing and transportation (with direct connectivity to road and rail networks) in the Gladstone region,” Mr Gemmell said.
