Expression of Interest – Pilbara Region
Marine Pilot – Experienced and Trainee Positions

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic provider of marine services (the Client) that prides themselves as experts in marine logistics. With a commitment to reliability, adaptability and punctuality, the Client plays a critical role in facilitating maritime operations and ensuring the safe passage of vessels through some of Australia’s busiest ports.

Through this process the Client is looking for two groups of up to 20 Marine Pilots, including:

Group 1 – Experienced Pilots

  • Must hold a Master Class 1 (Unlimited) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a fully licenced Marine Pilot in an Australian port or similar overseas port.
  • Must have experience piloting large vessels of 250 metre LOA or greater.
  • Proven experience of piloting various vessel types, including large bulk carriers.
  • Must possess a wide range of ship handling skills including manoeuvring and berthing large vessels in confined waters.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and mentoring role to lessor experienced Pilots and preferably able to demonstrate experience and capability to mentor and train other Pilots.

Group 2 – Trainee Pilots / Experienced Mariners

  • Must hold a minimum of a Chief Mate (Unlimited) certificate or equivalent.
  • No formal piloting experience required.
  • Looking to embark on training and qualify as a Marine Pilot in an Australian port.

Both groups of Pilots will follow the same EOI process and be selected not only on their respective experience and qualifications but also, importantly, on their fit and alignment with the Client’s values.

The EOI process will culminate in the successful applicants being offered a Conditional Offer of Employment either as a Marine Pilot or as a Trainee Marine Pilot. In both cases, there will be a minimum requirement for successful applicants to meet the current Pilbara Pilots training requirements. The Offer of Employment will become Unconditional once the Client is awarded the contract to provide the Pilotage Service. All successful applicants must pass a Certificate of Medical Fitness to undertake pilotage duties to the standard specified in Marine Order 76 (Health – medical fitness).

Employment and Remuneration

  • Successful candidates will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment which will become Unconditional on the Client’s award of contract to provide pilotage services at the allocated ports.
  • Shortlisted candidates may be required to undertake Psychometric Testing prior to award of a Conditional Offer of Employment.
  • The starting salary on day 1 for experienced Pilots is up to $300K inclusive of superannuation. This will increase up to $400K inclusive of superannuation on completion of training and award of an Unrestricted Pilots’ Licence.
  • The starting salary on day 1 for trainee Pilots is up to $200K inclusive of superannuation. This will increase up to $300K inclusive of superannuation on completion of initial training and award of restricted Pilots’ Licence. This will increase again up to $400K inclusive of superannuation on award of an Unrestricted Pilot’s Licence.
  • Pilots will work an equal time roster.
