PORT of Newcastle handled almost 11.8 million tonnes of trade in February 2025, a 2.1% increase on the 11.5 million tonnes handled during the same period in 2024.

Most of the increase can be attributed to exports with total exports from the port up 1.8% year on year from 11.15 million tonnes in February 2024 to 11.35 million tonnes.

The port exported 10.91 million tonnes of coal in February, a 0.7% decrease compared to the same month last year, when it exported 10.98 million tonnes of coal.

The second-largest export commodity after coal was wheat, with 340,284 tonnes exported during the month. This is an increase of almost 172% on February 2024, when the port exported a total of 125,134 tonnes.

Looking at imports, the largest commodity imported during the month was fuels at 179,654 tonnes. This made up almost 43% of the port’s total imports for the month.

The port recorded 128 coal vessel visits in February 2025, slightly up from 123 in February 2024.

And the port received 43 “diversified trade” vessel visits last month, up 33 non-coal vessel visits in February 2024.
