A GROUP of supply chain smart technology providers has united to form the Smart Container Alliance, a body to drive the adoption of smart container technology.
The Brussels-headquartered group, which includes ORBCOMM, Traxens, Nexxiot, Hoopo, Globe Tracker and Arviem, says its aims are to enhance cargo traceability, fortify maritime trade, and support global enforcement agencies in combating criminal networks.
“With geopolitical instability and climate disruptions posing risks to global trade, shipping companies must prioritize security and efficiency. The Alliance aims to advance industry standards, advocate for policy change, and foster collaboration among technology providers, shipowners, customs authorities, and international regulatory bodies like the EU and World Customs Organisation,” SCA says.
Charles Vincent, CEO ARVIEM, said smart cargo and container telematics are the foundation for the 21st century supply chain “with revolutionary new solutions for our society, authorities, governments, and businesses to structurally reduce illicit trade, cargo contamination, cargo waste, theft, and supply chain carbon footprint while simultaneously enhancing product authentication, on-time delivery commitments, asset productivity”.
CSA says its work aligns with the Joint Statement of EU and Global Industry & Trade Associations on International Customs Day 2025, and calls for increased investment in customs operations, digital transformation, and stronger public-private partnerships. By integrating smart technology solutions, it seeks to address the complexities of global trade and enhance customs efficiency.
Additionally, the Alliance will act as a platform for industry collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the promotion of best practices, it says.
“The Smart Container Alliance will act as a central platform for industry stakeholders to exchange knowledge, develop best practices, and collectively promote the widespread adoption of smart containers worldwide,” said Ittay Hayut, CEO, Hoopo.
The launch coincides with major EU Customs Union reforms, positioning smart containers at the forefront of a data-driven approach to customs checks. The Alliance will advocate for their economic and technological benefits, supporting initiatives that demonstrate their transformative potential in preventing smuggling, optimizing container usage, and ensuring supply chain transparency.
