A NORWEGIAN-FLAGGED ship that was seized and boarded by its flag nation over a subsea cable incident has been released.

Cargo ship Silver Dania was detained by Norwegian police last week on suspicion of involvement in causing damage to a telecoms cable in the Baltic Sea, and was the second vessel to be named by investigators in that case.

The all Russian-crewed vessel was seized at the request of Latvian authorities and brought to shore with assistance from Norwegian coast guard vessel KV Bison, Norwegian police had previously said.

“Troms police district has now conducted a number of investigative steps and secured what we see as necessary considering the request from Latvia,” said police attorney Ronny Jørgensen in Troms police district.

“The investigation will continue, but we see no reason for the ship to remain in Tromsø any longer.”

Jørgensen said there were no findings linking Silver Dania to the cable incident which saw a telecoms cable in the Baltic Sea damaged.

Norwegian police said it had searched the ship, conducted interviews, and secured evidence, prior to releasing the vessel.

The 113-metre length overall vessel, which sails between St. Petersburg and Murmansk, also has Norwegian operators, according to Equasis.

The cable damaging incident is one of several that remain under investigation, including tanker Eagle S in Finland and bulker Vezhen in Sweden.
