DREWRY’S World Container Index remained stable at US$3529 per 40-foot container this week, following its increase to US$3533 last Friday.
The latest figure is 66% below the previous pandemic peak of US$10,377 in September 2021 but 148% more than the average US$1420 in 2019 (pre-pandemic).
The average year-to-date composite index is US$3949 per FEU, which is US$1091 higher than the 10-year average of US$2858 (inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 covid period).
Freight rates from New York to Rotterdam increased 3% or US$23 to US$830 per FEU and those from Shanghai to Rotterdam increased 2% or US$80 to US$4855 per FEU.
Likewise, rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai, Shanghai to Genoa, Los Angeles to Shanghai and Shanghai to New York inched up 1% to US$520, US$5526, US$726 and US$5199 per FEU, respectively.
Rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles decreased 4% or US$137 to US$3582 per FEU and those from Rotterdam to New York shrank 1% or US$27 to US$2622 per FEU.
Drewry expects spot rates to remain stable next week.
