SOUTHERN Ports in Western Australia is helping fumigation company Fintran Australia and CBH in the search for an extremely flammable canister of insecticide that has fallen overboard from MV Century Shanghai at the Port of Esperance.

The bright yellow canister was intended to be used in the fumigation of the grain vessel on Saturday 9 November when the Fumitoxin insecticide was inadvertently dropped overboard into Port of Esperance waters.

A spokesperson for the port said as a port authority they support customers and their contractors in responding to incidents related to operations being undertaken at the port and have been searching and patrolling waters and local beaches.

The public is reminded that if they locate the canister, not to handle it and immediately contact Southern Ports on 0447 838 290.

Southern Ports has searched the immediate area where the canister was last sighted and has continued to patrol local beaches and waters.

The spokesperson said on Tuesday, the canister remains unaccounted for and may wash up onto local beaches over the coming days.

Fumitoxin is extremely flammable and exposure can cause serious harm.
