THE APPOINTMENT of Brent Mickelberg as the Queensland Government’s Minister for Transport and Main Road has been welcomed by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), an independent regulator for vehicles over 4.5 tonnes of gross vehicle mass.
NHVR chair Duncan Gay said he looked forward to working with Mr Mickelberg to continue to boost safety outcomes, productivity, and efficiency across Queensland’s heavy vehicle industry.
“On behalf of the Board, Chief Executive and NHVR staff, I congratulate Brent and welcome him to the role,” Mr Gay said.
“With Queensland’s heavy vehicle services this year transitioning from Transport and Main Roads to the NHVR, we are proud to now deliver important on-road compliance and education across this wide-reaching state.
“With a long record of public service, I trust Brent will be a strong supporter of industry as we continue to deliver reforms and services which improve road safety for all motorists.”
According to the Queensland Government, responsibilities of the role include land transport and safety, main roads, marine infrastructure, passenger and personalised transport, ports, railways, transport infrastructure, and the Cross River Rail project.
Further, Maritime Safety Queensland is a branch within the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Mr Mickelburg will take over from the former Minister for Transport Bart Mellish, who was only appointed to the role in December of last year.
Mr Mellish came into the portfolio with a major cabinet reshuffle that occurred after the former Premier, Steven Miles, was sworn in.
It was the first portfolio that Mr Mellish had been in charge of, having previously been assistant to the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.
NHVR’s Mr Gay thanked outgoing Minister Bart Mellish for his support during his time as Minister for Transport.
“We wish Bart all the best for his future,” he said.
