PORT OF MELBOURNE will have a new board chair from 1 March 2025 when Debbie Goodin succeeds the long-serving John Stanhope, who has led the port since its privatisation in late 2016 via a 50-year lease from the Victorian Government.
With more than 30 years of senior management experience in the public and private sectors, Ms Goodin has a proven track record of working in complex environments, with a demonstrated focus on corporate governance and commitment to environmental, social, and sustainability matters, the PoM says.
Ms Goodin’s LinkedIn profile details 25 roles, including as non executive director and/or chair of Atlas Arteria Ltd (formerly Macquarie Altas Roads), gas infrastructure business APA Group, and Australian Pacific Airports Corporation.
“Her extensive experience across various industries, particularly in critical infrastructure – including the water, energy, and transport sectors – will help move Port of Melbourne forward through its next phase of growth and development,” PoM said. “Ms Goodin brings a long-term view of infrastructure development, complemented by a wealth of experience as an established director and chair across private, public, government-owned, and not-for-profit organisations.
Ms Goodin said she is pleased to be joining PoM as Chair: “The port is essential infrastructure that has wide-reaching economic and community impacts as well opportunities to positively impact the lives of Victorians and Australians. I am confident that, Port of Melbourne – working together with government and other stakeholders – can enhance Victoria’s competitive position, promote economic prosperity, and support the liveability of Greater Melbourne.”
Current Chair John Stanhope will step down from his role on 28 February 2025, having been instrumental in ensuring the success of the Port as it transitioned from government to privately leased. During his tenure, Mr Stanhope oversaw the development of the first roadmap for the future of the port, ensuring effective response to trade demand growth while bringing positive effects to the broader community. “Port of Melbourne is grateful for his leadership and dedication, and wishes him all the best,” the company said..
Ms Goodin will participate in Board meetings as an observer from October 2024, until she joins as Chair in March 2025.
