PORTS North has awarded the contract for deconstruction of White’s Shed, a “badly dilapidated” sugar handling facility behind the Cairns cruise terminal.
Demolition specialist Demex has been appointed contractor for the project. The Queensland-based company is due to commence preparations on 22 July, with deconstruction to be underway by 1 August 2024.
Ports North announced last month that the shed would be removed following calls from the port operator and local stakeholders.
The facility hasn’t been used since the 1960s, but it contains a culturally significant conveyor which was part of Queensland’s first mechanical sugar loading system. Ports North has been in consultation with the Queensland Heritage Council regarding deconstruction of the site.
Ports North noted the deconstruction project coincides with the cruise shipping off-season and would not disrupt services or passengers.
“During deconstruction the surrounding parkland will be fenced off for safety and we will need to close a section of Wharf Street on the southbound side,” it said.
“We have consulted with the relevant organisations regarding flora and fauna risk and will abide by their advice regarding any disturbance to plant or wildlife.”
The parkland will be reopened for public use no later than the end of September.
