CONTAINER volumes decreased at Port of Melbourne in October 2023, down 4.7% on the same month last year.
Total container throughput for October 2023 came to 281,741 TEU.
Full container import volumes (excluding Bass Strait volumes) were down 4.3% against October 2022 figures.
Furniture, metal manufactures, domestic appliances and toys and sporting goods imports were all below last year’s volumes.
Full container exports (excluding Bass Strait) were down 3.3% in October 2023, with wheat, hay, chaff and fodder and raw cotton below 2022 volumes.
Total empty container movements also decreased in October 2023, down 8% on movements in the same month last year.
Port of Melbourne’s non-container trade increased, however, up 4.8% in October 2023 against figures posted in October 2022.
The liquid bulk trade was up 3.7% on figures posted last October and the dry bulk trade was up 35.8%.
Motor vehicle units were down 8.8% and the break bulk trade decreased by 16.6%.
