PORT of Brisbane saw a significant increase in container volumes crossing the wharves over October, according to the latest trade statistics from the port.
Brisbane handled a total of 142,597 TEU in October 2022. This was an increase of 13% on total container throughput in October 2021.
This increase was driven by robust growth in both imports and exports of containerised cargo.
In total, Port of Brisbane handled 66,949 TEU of containerised imports in October, up 12.3% on the same month last year.
The largest import commodity for the month was “import other”, up 19% to 29,951 TEU.
The second biggest containerised import commodity for the month was household items, up 7% to 8717 TEU. This was followed by building products, up 26% to 7249 TEU.
Exports that went through the Port of Brisbane for this past October came to 69,119 TEU, an increase of 17% on the same month last year.
The biggest export commodity, as usual, was fresh Queensland air, with 34,276 TEU of empty containers exported over the month – an increase of 15% on empty exports in October 2021.
The ports second-biggest export commodity for the month was “export other” at 13,294 TEU (up 13.8%) – this was followed by containerised cotton exports at 6758 TEU (up 110% on last year).
Zooming out and looking at total trade (including containerised and non-containerised cargo) through Port of Brisbane we see the port handled 2.72 million tonnes. This was an increase of 2.6% on October 2021.
And looking at total motor vehicle imports we see a big increase in throughput – a 52.3% increase to 24,111 units in October 2022.
