PORT of Melbourne’s total container throughput saw a marked increase this past October, compared with the same month last year, according to the latest available trade data from the port.
The port saw 295,149 TEU of both empty and full containers cross the wharves in October 2022, an increase of 15.6% on October 2021.
Full imports and full exports were up, as were total empty container movements.
The port’s full overseas imports were up 11.9% in October (compared with October 2021). Imports of domestic appliances, non-electrical machinery, ceramic goods, clothing and miscellaneous manufactures were all up on last year.
Port of Melbourne’s full overseas exports were up 11% in the same period. Exports of wheat, cottonseed, raw cotton, malt, meat and nuts were all higher than last year.
Non-containerised trade through the port also saw increases over the month. Dry bulk trade was up 13.4%, breakbulk was up 22.2%, liquid bulk trade was up 8.3% and motor vehicle imports were 27.9% above October 2021.
The port said container trade for November was tracking below November 2021.
