MARITIME and logistics community golf enthusiasts took to the greens in support of the Westmead Children’s Hospital at the 2022 Shipping Industry Golf Day.

The 33rd industry fundraiser of its kind, this year’s golf challenge was held at the prestigious Long Reef Golf Club at Collaroy, northern Sydney.

The day began with breakfast at the membership house before teams dispersed on the course, known around Australia for its ocean views.

Teams relaxed over lunch and drinks after the round had concluded. Tony Cousins, managing director at Antares Marine and MC for the day, thanked the group for their participation and donations over the years.

“We will tick over three quarters of a million dollars donated to the Westmead Children’s Hospital today, so thank you very much,” Mr Cousins said.

Guests then welcomed a special update from Dr Geoff McCowage, senior oncologist at the Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Dr McCowage gave an insightful presentation explaining how leukemia impacts a child’s body and how it is treated.

He thanked the industry for its financial support, which helps the hospital’s young patients and their families every year.

“Having people who are in it with you for the long-haul is a very valuable thing – enormously valuable – so thank you,” he said.

And Peter Graham, the father of a young boy who was recently treated for cancer, described the difficult journey his family had been on, prompting an emotional response from guests.

He reminded his audience of the life-saving impact of their donations and thanked them for their generosity.

The industry golf day has, over the years, raised more than $730,000 for research into childhood cancer at Westmead Children’s Hospital.

The total funds raised at this year’s event is expected to be announced soon.
