The biggest story this week was the release of the Productivity Commission’s draft report on Australia’s maritime logistics system.
It found Australia’s biggest container ports are underperforming to the point of costing the economy an estimated $605 million each year.
Also in the news, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority co-ordinated the rescue of two sailors in the Tasman Sea with support from the Royal Australian Airforce, NSW Police and two nearby cargo ships.
An apparent build-up of landside congestion in Port of Brisbane became a source of concern for port users, while in Port Botany, a wave of new projects is expected to lift permanent empty container storage by more than 16,500 TEU.
And two men were sentenced to prison after the Australian Border Force found 645 kilograms of meth in a container full of barbeques.
