A SEAFARER on board the bulker Globe Electra (IMO 9483827) has tested positive to COVID-19.
According to Maritime Safety Queensland, the ship’s master reported a crew member feeling unwell on Monday 10 August, with the vessel already being monitored due to a recent crew change overseas.
The ship’s berthing was postponed until a full assessment of the illness report could be made.
The vessel is currently at anchor off Abbot Point, the large coal terminal near Bowen in central Queensland.
According to MSQ, a helicopter was sourced and flew doctors to the ship on Wednesday 13 August for testing and treatment.
The unwell seafarer and 19 other crew were all COVID-19 tested.
Queensland Health are currently processing results for the remaining 19 crew.
“MSQ is finalising plans in conjunction with QLD Health this morning to determine the best course of action and medical support/treatment,” MSQ said in a statement.
“MSQ is working with the agent and master of the ship to ensure the remaining crew observe all necessary precautions whilst their results are known as well as the infected member remaining isolated.
“There has been no shore based personnel interact with vessel (except medical staff for testing).”
Globe Electra is flagged in the Marshall Islands and had sailed from the port of Zhoushan in China.
MSQ general manager Angus Mitchell said the health and welfare of the crew member and all those remaining on board was the pressing priority.
“We’ve done this successfully before with Hokkaido Bulker so don’t expect any significant issues,” Mr Mitchell said.
MSQ has done more than 130 precautionary tests in instances such as this over the past few months.
