MICHAEL McCormack has defeated a challenge from Barnaby Joyce for the position of leader of the federal National Party.
The outcome means Mr McCormack will remain Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure.
David Littleproud becomes the deputy leader of the party.
The leadership spill occurred following the resignation of former agriculture minister Bridget McKenzie.
Mr McCormack’s position appeared to be under threat late on Monday when influential Queensland MP Matt Canavan publicly announced his support for Mr Joyce.
The controversial Mr Joyce led the party until early 2018, when he quit following revelations of a relationship with a staff member.
Meanwhile Adam Bandt is the new leader of the Australian Greens, following the resignation of Senator Richard Di Natale.
