PORTS in Western Australia’s Kimberley region are keeping a close eye on Tropical Cyclone Blake,
The storm is lashing the state’s north-west coast, bringing with it gales and heavy rain.
A spokesperson for Pilbara Ports Authority indicated they did not expect major impact.
“Pilbara Ports Authority has maintained a monitoring phase under port cyclone plans since Saturday.
“Current indications are that Tropical Cyclone Blake will not have any direct impact upon any of Pilbara Ports Authority’s ports,” the spokesperson said.
“The system is expected to cross the coast well East of Port Hedland early Wednesday and then dissipate over land.”
Pilbara Ports Authority manages the giant dry bulk terminals at Port Hedland and Dampier.
Cyclone activity a year ago caused a serious impact upon the iron ore trade by flooding mines and damaging infrastructure.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the north-western sub-region has a 39% chance of more tropical cyclones than average and a 61% chance of fewer tropical cyclones than average during the 2019-20 (November to April) cyclone season.
