EMERGENCY services combined resources this week to airlift a sick crew member from the geared bulker MV Portland Bay.
The medevac took place on Monday, 3 June as the ship was 400km north-east of Darwin.
The ship’s crew contacted emergency services via the Telemedical Advice Service saying the crew member required urgent aid.
According to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the ship diverted towards Melville Island, off the Northern Territory coast, where the crewmember was winched by a CareFlight rescue helicopter.
The AMSA challenger jet Cairns provided communications relay support.
The 170m geared bulk carrier MV Portland Bay was 400km NE of Darwin when they requested medical advice for a member of their crew.
