ANTHONY Albanese has been confirmed as Opposition leader and leader of the Australian Labor Party in Parliament.
Mr Albanese was uncontested with other senior Labor figures such as Chris Bowen and Tanya Plibersek having opted not to contest the position.
Former Opposition leader Bill Shorten had resigned on election night.
The result will be seen by some as positive for freight and logistics, with Mr Albanese having been the Opposition infrastructure spokesman for the past six years and a former minister before that.
In a Tweet, Mr Albanese thanked members of caucus, rank and file members and affiliates for their support.
“Together we can return our great party to government in three years’ time,” he said.
Mr Albanese has been a vocal supporter of reviving Australian-flagged shipping and introduced a range of laws in 2012 aimed at achieving this.
He also has been a sharp critic of aspects of the Inland Rail project.
